Our Gingerbread Party

Decorating gingerbread houses has become a bit of a holiday tradition at our house. Wilson and I started it even before Emilia was born. (We had some pretty elaborate houses back then.) But this year, we thought it’d be fun to invite a couple of our friends to join in the fun and make a new holiday tradition - a Gingerbread Decorating Party!

Here are 5 helpful tips to make your gingerbread party easy and yet, so much fun!

1. Run, run as fast as you can, and get your gingerbread houses early! I always buy my gingerbread houses from Bulk Barn and typically, try to pick mine up in late November because they sell out fast. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, go quick to your local Bulk Barn. I know that a couple stores in Winnipeg still have them in stock!

2. Buy Pre-made Houses! Last year I bought the houses that you have to assemble and even though they are fun, I think for young kids and toddlers, it is just easier to buy the pre-made ones.

3. Put the candy in little ice cream cups. I bought them at Dollarama and they are a perfect size for holding the candy. Also, being plastic/paper you don’t have to worry about those little fingers knocking one over.

4. Pre-make and pre-bag the icing! This is KEY - you don’t want to be fussing with icing while the kids are waiting with candy in front of them! Ahhh that just spells disaster! I bought the icing mix from Bulk Barn, added water, mixed it and bagged it. So easy! (If you prefer not to bag the icing, just put a cold, damp towel over the icing bowl instead to keep it fresh for your guests!)

5. Last, but definitely not least, serve fun Christmas drinks! Whether it’s eggnog or cranberry punch for the kids or a Christmas cocktail for the adults, this will get everyone into the holiday spirit.

What are your holiday traditions??
