The Playroom Update

Our house has a little nook right off the kitchen. When we were looking to buy our house we thought it was a little odd. But in actuality, this little nook has been perfect for what we need! Right now it’s set up as the kids playroom but we can see it shifting in the future to become a homework/study space with a desk and comfy reading chair.

When we moved in, we immediately set it up with the Kate & Norah Tent, the IKEA kitchen for kids and a little table and chairs. It was the perfect little playroom for Emilia at that age! However, over the span of a year, Emilia has stopped using the tent as much and she has grown to love drawing and doing crafts. So, our cute little playroom just wasn’t fitting the bill anymore.

Here‘s how we set it up when we first moved in:

Playroom Before

In planning for this update, there were a few things we knew that we needed to do and adding storage was the most important! The piles of stickers, glitter, glue, crayons and markers all needed a home. We already had a 2x2 Kallax shelf but it wasn’t quite doing the trick. So, we repositioned it and added another 1x4 Kallax shelf. But the key to getting the most storage out of the Kallax shelves was adding the inserts. IKEA sells all sorts of inserts for these shelves and they really make organizing a breeze! We added three inserts, all with two drawers which is perfect for all the craft supplies. I still want to organize it a little more but it is SO much more functional now!

Another thing I wanted to add to the playroom was a place to display Emilia’s art and crafts. The IKEA Dignetet curtain wire works great! Pinterest win! I made a few cosmetic changes to the playroom too. I painted the IKEA kitchen all white, added the paper roll and new rug, and put up some of Emily Winfield Martin’s artwork.

This playroom update is much more practical for Emilia’s age and with what she’s doing. She’s able to find and use all of her craft supplies without me digging through piles! Soon enough Jacob will we joining Emilia in here. And for some reason I imagine him trying to draw on walls... 😬😅
