Enjoy the Little Moments

I had all intentions of writing about our trip to Assiniboine Zoo Lights for todays post. I was so excited to go and I had imagined Emilia’s awe of the sparkling lights. Well, it didn’t quite go as I had planned...

The evening started with Jacob having a hard time getting to sleep (our plan was to put him to bed and leave him with my Mom). His nose was stuffed, he was congested and coughing, not to mention clingy to me. A struggle to get to sleep! Meanwhile, Emilia was in her own world reading books to her baby, not listening to anyone who was trying to get her ready. Time was quickly flying by as we got no where and frustrations were running high! Needless to say, once we finally got out of the house, no one was feeling quite up to the original plan.

Instead, we opted for an ice cream cone and a drive down Polar Bear Lane to see the Christmas lights. It ended up being a nice outing for the three of us! Emilia thoroughly enjoyed herself, excitedly pointing out all the snowmen and Santa lights. Her face covered and tummy full of ice cream. In the end, it was still a special evening for her and that, is what matters.

I’m sure we’ve all felt that feeling of frustration when things aren’t going as planned. And I think we might be prone to feel it more during the holiday season. Maybe because there is so much going on - parties, buying and wrapping presents, sending holiday cards, family get togethers, baking and the list goes on! With all of the hustle and bustle, it seems so easy to focus on what needs to be done, or your plans and commitments. But if I learned anything from not going to the Zoo Lights, it’s that we need to enjoy the little moments. Things may not go as planned, (and with two kids, I should know that they normally don’t ) but we can still enjoy making those little memories with our kids.

My goal for the rest of the holidays is to just go with flow, make those special memories, slow down to enjoy all of the Christmas events and see the magic that the kids see!
